08/2015 - San Diego Visit
08/2015 - We spent about a week in San Diego with long-time NJ friends, but no dog this time. :( Our friend Kathi lives there full-time & our other friend Joanna lives in Florida but summers in San Diego. It's only about a 6 hour drive for us. When we arrived Joanna had prepared a phenomenal curry dinner which included toppings of coconut, peanuts, raisins, chutney, pineapple, banana & mandarin oranges - yum! Kathy joined us the following day and we spent it driving around town, walking around a farmer's market, visiting Coronado Island, lunching at the Hotel Del, and heading up to La Jolla to catch a gorgeous sunset.
On Sunday we drove up to Long Beach because there was an exhibit of street art at the Long Beach Museum of Art, called "Vitality and Verve, Transforming the Urban Landscape", that we all wanted to see. Some of the murals were painted right onto the museum walls & some appeared to be 3-D. It was a small exhibit but very impressive & enjoyable. We had lunch at Claire's at the museum & enjoyed a delightful breeze & an ocean view, along with great food. Instead of heading right back to San Diego, we detoured to Temecula (wine country) & overnighted at the Temecula Creek Inn. After exploring their tiny town the next day, we headed out to do a little tasting (& buying of course).
On our final day Joanna took us all to Free Flight, an exotic bird sanctuary in Del Mar. They take in birds that have been relinquished for whatever reason, & also board birds for owners on vacation. Some of the birds are available for adoption but others are pretty stressed & will live their lives out at the sanctuary. Many of the birds love to be petted & scratched & Kathi seemed to have the magical hands in our group. We headed up to Solana Beach for a little shopping & closed out the day with another sunset & dinner at a wonderful restaurant called Jake's in Del Mar.
We really enjoyed the company, the weather & the activities while we visited these two terrific ladies. We'll be back for more...!
