1/13/10 - Happy New Year! We spent the holidays in NJ this year, as Candy is winding down her time to retirement. I left the sunny 60's of AZ to venture into the snowy, icy 20's of NJ. But I got to spend time with many friends, some long-long-time relationships & others more recent. We went to Gettysburg, PA for the Christmas weekend to visit my younger brother & sister-in-law, and my mother, who was visiting them for the holidays. Best of all was the time I got to spend with my honey though! We took in a Broadway play (highly recommend it - Memphis), watched the skaters in Rockefeller Center, visited with Candy's sister & brother-in-law, and just enjoyed being together. Earlier in the month I had also visited more family who lives in OH, my older brother & sister-in-law with their 5 & 6 year-olds, and my mother. So it was a friend & family-filled holiday season - just delightful!
Demi stayed with a petsitter I found through a service called Sleepover Rover. It's a great concept, but only offered in CA, NV, AZ and CO. Animal lovers serve as hosts for you to "board" your pet with them in their home. We have a couple who retired from MA as our sitters & they love Demi! She is happy to see them when she stays, but pooped from all the attention she gets (especially from the 8-year-old twin granddaughters) when she gets home. It certainly makes leaving her a lot easier when we know she is so well-cared-for.
As far as activities, I've signed up to do "citrus gleaning" for the United Food Bank. Many homeowners have plenty of citrus trees that are full of fruit right now & the homeowners need help picking the extra fruit which will be donated to the food bank. Every January & February, the food bank puts out a call for volunteer pickers. More to come on that after I actually do some picking.
I am also volunteering to do some diversity training. While soliciting corporate sponsorships for the local HRC dinner, I found a number of companies that could use some education around lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender issues. Since Chubb had a fantastic program put together on the topic, I got materials from them & from Brian McNaught (upon whose work the Chubb training is based) have offered my services to a few organizations.
January is lovely in AZ. The temperatures have been in the low 70's during the day, dropping to the low 40's at night. It has been sunny & clear, and a pleasure to be outside!
